Content Inventory

What is a content inventory?

A content inventory is a quantitative analysis of the current content on a website, including a full list of pages and their associated metadata. This information is typically captured in a spreadsheet and is often the first step in understanding the existing universe of content you have to work with.

Why should you conduct a content inventory?

The first step in developing an effective content strategy is to understand the depth and breadth of the current content on the website. By capturing this information in a spreadsheet, along with associated metadata, we can generate valuable quantitative insights, such as:

  • Which topics are being covered the most? Which are being covered the least?

  • How are topics related to each other (information hierarchy)?

  • Which pages have been updated most recently? Which haven’t been updated?

  • Which SMEs or business units are responsible for each section?

  • What keywords are being targeted for each page?

  • Which pages are performing best against established KPIs (e.g., pageviews, conversion rate)
