Taxonomy
What is a taxonomy?
A taxonomy is a set of tables that document objects, categories, relationships, and hierarchies. A taxonomy is used to tag and categorize content for findability purposes.
They provide the back-end logic that allows users to navigate and filter content or products. Much of the theory and practice of taxonomy is similar to IA. Taxonomy is different to IA in that it generally has a hub and spoke relationship as opposed to a tree relationship.
Why do we create taxonomies?
Taxonomies are used to create consistent frameworks and organization of data and content, helping to inform relationships between and across digital touchpoints, channels, and their experiences.
Equally important is the value and clarity they bring to the organization of data and associated content to businesses and end-users.
